About Gail Doggett
Hi, I'm Gail, your coach, so pleased you're here!
I've been working with writers for two decades, from acquiring fiction and non-fiction at a major publishing house, all the way to being in 1:1 critique relationships, and accountability partnerships.
I bloody love talking about stories, and characters, ideas and I'm also very aware of what it's like to feel stuck and wanting to bang your head on the desk (please don't do that!).
Many of my clients are, like me -- and maybe like you? Late diagnosed neurodivergent women writers, and have come to a turning point in their lives where neurodivergence, peri/menopause, work demands and caring responsibilities are all colliding with each other. I offer a safe space to create and maintain your creative practice, with gentle and practical advice on tap.
I help you to start/write/finish your work, through what I call "BookDoubling". That's my own version of body doubling with extra editorial feedback as needed, using my background as a commissioning editor. It’s a mixture of whatever you need, accountability, cajoling, gentle arse-kicking, encouragement, validation, to get you where you need to be.
Originally from Ireland, I've now lived in London longer than anywhere else as it’s home as much as where I grew up. We're now in east London, 'we' being my two boys, and Mr D. And our black cat, Sparkle, who's an absolute madam but we love her.
My reading mojo disappeared during COVID but it’s back with a vengeance. I especially love finding a new-to-me author with a backlist that I can binge-read. I read a lot of fantasy! Old faves, beloved authors and recent reads include:
Ruth Ozeki, Ben Arronovitch, Leigh Bardugo, Jodi Taylor, Alix E. Harrow, Natasha Pulley, Jonathan Stroud, Mick Herron, P. Djèli Clark, V. E. Schwab, Kate Griffin, Frances Hardinge, Katherine May, Amy Liptrot, Erin Morgenstern, Maggie O’Farrell.
I’m also a maker and crafter and live in a house filled with yarn, paper, Lego, notebooks, haberdashery, DnD dice, fountain pen and inks, fabric and books. And for all of us neurodivergent folk, as a late-diagnosed ADHDer myself, I also want to reiterate that there's no shame either in getting stuck or just feeling like you can't get yourself together to do this, even though it's all that you can think about. But I do want you to tell your story.
Get in touch, and let's see what we can do together!
